Manchester City women's European ambitions took a blow as they suffered an exit at the hands of Real Madrid women for a second consecutive year. The Spanish side won 1-0 in front of a crowd of 2,811 at Estadio Alfredo di Stefano.
Caroline Weir scored the only goal of the game, coming back to haunt her former side and restrict them to domestic competitions only. Laia Aleixandri, Bunny Shaw and Deyna Castellanos all had chances to change the scoreline, but were unable to take them.
Real Madrid women advance in Champions League qualification round
Weir was able to produce a clinical finish by shielding the ball with her body and turning to finish the move to score the decisive goal. It was a very close affair between both teams, but ultimately, Madrid were able to come out on top.
Real Madrid women will now be one of the 24 teams battling for 12 spots in the Women's Champions League. Juventus, Rangers, Roma and Ajax are among the other teams that have made it to this stage of the tournament.
Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich will enter the tournament at this stage. Only four teams have qualified for the competition automatically, with Chelsea, Wolfsburg, Lyon and Barcelona earning their place through their domestic success.
