As a college student living in a dorm, you have the opportunity to forge close connections with classmates and form new, sometimes lifelong, relationships. However, getting sick far from home presents a unique challenge for many students. Not knowing what resources your college offers can add unwanted stress. Fortunately, many illnesses are preventable or less stressful to manage by adopting a few healthy habits, especially for those living in dorms.
Staying healthy includes keeping up to date with vaccinations. This year's flu vaccine and the new COVID-19 booster are now available at most physicians' offices and public health facilities in our state. Practicing good hygiene is essential for dorm residents due to close proximity with others.
As a nurse, I am often asked about the necessity of getting an annual flu vaccine. This year's flu vaccine was formulated based on research from last year's outbreaks. Like the evolving COVID-19 vaccine, scientists analyze wastewater to identify microbes impacting the population and make educated predictions to develop a vaccine against similar strains. They also consider many variants, researching their morphological properties to create an effective vaccine.
Remember, getting your influenza and COVID-19 vaccines annually is key to maintaining health.
