Following a recent Estyn monitoring visit in June, Denbigh High School has now been removed from Special Measures.
His Majesty's Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, Estyn, have confirmed that the school has made sufficient progress against the recommendations, and therefore no longer need to be in a statutory category for intervention.
During the monitoring visit, Estyn identified that the school has shown good progress against the recommendations made by Estyn in 2016. Highlights of the report include:
- Pupils apply themselves diligently and develop their knowledge, skills and understanding appropriately.
- The school has successfully refreshed its approach to rewarding and celebrating positive behaviour.
- Teachers form positive working relationships with their classes.
- The school has strengthened its strategies to improve literacy skills across the curriculum.
- The school has strengthened its provision for Welsh appropriately.
- Leaders at all levels use a suitable range of first hand evidence to evaluate their work.
- Leaders at all levels have a more accurate view of the school's strengths and areas for improvement.
- The Headteacher has provided clear strategic direction. This has had a positive impact on staff morale and helped teachers and leaders to increase the pace of school improvement this year.
Headteacher, Mr Glen Williams, who was appointed in September 2022 and has led the school throughout this academic year said:
"Everyone at Denbigh High School works very hard to ensure that as a school we are always improving and providing the best education and opportunities that we can.
The recent inspection has seen the impact of the developments taking place at the school and now we have a great platform to be able to continue our school's growth and do what is right for our learners.
The support that the school has received from the community and local authority has helped us make the changes that we needed and shows the focus that everyone has to ensure that our learners will leave the Denbigh High ready to succeed in their future. I would also like to thank all the staff and learners at the school as they make this school the unique and special place that it is".
Councillor Gill German, Deputy Leader of Denbighshire County Council and Lead Member for Education, Children and Families said:
"I am absolutely delighted to hear this and it is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the headteacher and staff this year. Just wonderful news to go into the summer break with, a huge well done to all".
Ms Kate Sutherland, The Chair of the Governing Body at Denbigh High School added:
