Greetings and welcome to another issue of Emmen Weekly, where we take a look at what's been going on in the games industry lately.
This week's issue covers stories such as tales of a possible Dark Souls anime, a highly anticipated announcement for Final Fantasy 14 fans, a Futurama x Fortnite crossover, and a big win for Xbox fans.
With no further ado, let's dive in!
Netflix Reportedly Developing Dark Souls Anime
Rumors and speculation have begun circulating that streaming giant Netflix is working on an anime adaptation of the beloved From Software classic, Dark Souls.
The story comes from Giant Freakin' Robot which claims that its trusted and proven sources revealed that this anime will be one of the company's first truly original anime.
As of yet, this news is in its rumor stage with no further details available. That said, there some aspects of this story we can discuss further.
Dark Souls being chosen as a game to adapt is hardly surprising, considering its status as a modern classic. In addition to breathtaking fights, the game also had deep lore, along with memorable characters.
That said, Dark Souls is also a game known for its vague dialogue, obscure quests, most of the lore being hidden in item descriptions. How the creators plan on handling these parts of the game while telling a coherent story that can be understood will be interesting to see.
For now, just know that Dark Souls is getting a Netflix anime. We will keep an eye on this story as it develops.
Final Fantasy 14's Next Expansion Revealed
The next major expansion has been announced for the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV.
Dubbed Dawntrail, this is the fifth major expansion for the game and was announced during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest keynote by Director, Naoki Yoshida.
In the teaser trailer, we got to see a summer vacation theme and multiple new jobs. Players will be traveling to the part of the world known as Tural (the New World).
Dawntrail's story will reportedly be "the best summer vacation a hero could possibly have" and marks the first step into a new story saga for the game, following the conclusion of the previous expansion, Endwalker.
The expansion will include many content features including new allied tribes such as the Pelupelu, which is a race that debuted in Final Fantasy X and X-2.
In addition to these short guys, patch 7.0 will bring the following updates:
- A level cap increase from level 90 to 100, including new skills for all jobs
- Multiple new jobs: Yoshi-P did not say what these were, but confirmed they would both be DPS roles, one melee and one ranged magical DPS
- New dungeons
- New enemies
- A duty support update
- New gear and recipes
- New lifestyle content
- New variant dungeons
- New raids, including a new Alliance raid that will be "even more Final Fantasy-ish"
- PvP update
Version 7.0 will also showcase the game's first major graphical upgrade, along with expanding the game's free trial all the way up to the second expansion, Stormblood.
If there ever was a time to try this beloved MMORPG, it would be now. With nods to many other Final Fantasy games, along with an interesting story of its own, Final Fantasy 14 has captured hearts around the world.
We at Emmen Gaming cannot WAIT to learn more about Dawntrail and all the new things it will bring!
Futurama Heads to Fortnite
A collaboration between Fortnite and the animated comedy show Futurama has just kicked off.
The collaboration added some characters from the show into the game's item shop. To that end, you can now play as Fry, Leela, or Bender. Additionally, the famous Planet Express ship is also available as a glider, along with an emote that lets you shuffle like Dr. Zoidberg.
Players also gained access to two new weapons. One of these weapons is Bender's Shiny Metal Raygun, which fires unlimited plasma but overheats after repeated use for a period of time.
The other weapon is the new heavy duty Mammoth Pistol.
Fortnite is known for collaborating with many existing franchises and brands to add known media characters, artifacts, vehicles, and other recognizable aspects of pop culture into it. Most recently, we saw a collaboration with the Transformers franchise and the Nike brand.
Square Promises to Bring more Games to Xbox
Following the announcement that the critically acclaimed MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Xbox console, Square Enix also made a promise to bring more of its games to the Xbox.
The news was announced during the Final Fantasy Fan Fest 2023. FFXIV game director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) welcomed Xbox's own Phil Spencer on stage with the Square Enix CEO, Takashi Kiryu.
While on stage, Kiryu made the following statement:
"And one more thing: as CEO of Square Enix, we want to continue to deliver fabulous games to fans across the world. And of course, we want to welcome the Xbox community as well. And starting with today's announcement of Final Fantasy XIV coming in spring 2024, and whenever possible, we are planning to bring our games to Xbox for players around the world to enjoy. We're really looking forward to working closely with Phil and the Xbox team to make this possible."
In response, Spencer said the following:
"Thank you Kiryu-san. we deeply respect the rich legacy of Square Enix, and we look forward to building on the relationship that we've established in bringing Final Fantasy XIV to the Xbox, and partnering closely with you and the Square Enix team on future games."
Square Enix and its close relationship with Sony is no secret. Square has had exclusivity deals with Sony for a long time now. Even FF16 launched exclusively on PlayStation consoles, with no news of an Xbox version.
This close relationship has been one that Microsoft has been eyeing for a while. In fact, during the recent trial against the FTC, we learned that Xbox seriously considered buying Square Enix in 2019.
Additionally, FF16 came up repeatedly in the trial as an example of the kind of games PlayStation bought exclusivity rights to.
If we can draw any conclusion from these events, it is that Xbox's key priority seems to be ensuring that more games are added to its game library and not miss out on major releases.
As such, Microsoft and Square striking a deal is hardly surprising. We hope that this move will draw new fans to and renewed interest in Square Enix properties such as Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, NieR, and so on.
