On September 20th, the online Indian gaming platform WinZO announced it had filed a lawsuit against Google. According to a legal filing seen by Reuters, WinZO is looking to stop Google from allowing real-money games for fantasy sports and rummy from appearing on its platform.
Previously, Google didn't allow any games involving real money in India. However, last month, Google said that real-money fantasy sports and rummy games would be allowed on the Play Store in India as part of a year-long pilot program.
In its lawsuit, WinZO claims that it had contacted Google prior to this filing to contest this new policy, saying it was "unfair." After WinZO failed to receive a response from Google, the company was forced to take legal action after identifying this decision by Google as an "unfair trade practice."
According to a source close to the situation, the lawsuit was filed on September 21st. As a result, the case is expected to be heard over the next few weeks.
Google did not make a comment on the lawsuit. However, the organization did previously state that its pilot program was "taking a measured approach that will help us collate learnings."
