Tyson Fury is backing Deontay Wilder to become the undisputed heavyweight champion after walking away from the sport in the immediate aftermath of his sixth-round KO win over Dillian Whyte.
'The Gypsy King' had been consistently talking about retirement in the build-up to his WBC title defence against Whyte and stuck to his word by calling time on his career after knocking out 'The Body Snatcher' with a devastating uppercut in round six.
Fury KOd Whyte in round six
The 33-year-is expected to relinquish his heavyweight title in the coming weeks and he believes Wilder will reclaim the WBC title in his absence before setting up a fight with Usyk or Joshua for all the marbles.
"I'd like to see Deontay Wilder fight whoever [wins Joshua v Usyk II] for it again," Fury told Behind the Gloves.
Fury is confused by the fact Wilder is still ranked at number one with the WBC despite suffering back-to-back losses in his most recent bouts with the Englishman.
"I don't know how, that's impossible. He's lost three fights in a row and is still number one rated, but that's up to [the WBC].
Despite disagreeing with Wilder's WBC standing, Fury believes 'The Bronze Bomber' is the best of the rest at heavyweight and deserves more respect for what he has achieved in the sport.
"Deontay made 10 title defences, more than anybody else, he said. "He equalled Muhammad Ali's record, beat Vitali Klitschko's record, and doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Fury's scored back-to-back stoppage wins over Wilder
"I do believe he's still the second-best heavyweight in the world, Deontay Wilder. I believe he knocks everybody else out but me."
The British boxer twice knocked out 'The Bronze Bomber' during their trilogy of fights, as well outboxing the American over 12 rounds when they first fought only to be on the wrong end of a controversial draw.
Wilder hasn't fought since suffering his second knockout loss to Fury in October 2021 and now it appears that he may get an immediate crack at a world title when he returns to the ring later this year.
Although Fury appears to be done with professional boxing he isn't totally done with fighting. The lineal champion brought UFC heavyweight king Francis Ngannou to the ring post-fight at Wembley Stadium as they try to build a 2023 crossover exhibition bout with hybrid rules.
