The NL East has gotten more challenging, and as a result, the New York Mets saw the writing on the wall and traded Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and a few others. The prospects of note were Luis Angel Acuna, Drew Gilbert, and Ryan Clifford. The two from Houston patrol the outfield. Verlander and his no-trade steered the Mets and their limited trade partners back to the Astros, and the Mets tried to work out the best deal they could. That's fine, but the messaging has been all over the board, and that's concerning.
Scherzer said the Mets are Planning on Contending in 2025 or 2026
The Mets planned to contend this year. They didn't. So, they broke up the band. Fans with season tickets have invested in this team, and Steven Cohen picked up the rest of the tab, spending more money to trade his players—more than teams' total payrolls like the Baltimore Orioles, who look like a contender. Scherzer broke the news of the Mets' "plan". Mets GM Billy Eppler has been less forthcoming. So where is the truth? Will Cohen have to set the record straight? Will they try to?
2024 Will Be Just Another Year for the Mets
The Mets will spend money. They will have to purchase three pitchers, among other needs. Don't expect them to contend. They won't want to rule it out, but fans aren't going to buy it as they did this offseason. The talk is the Mets will try and get another Japanese pitcher. Kodai Senga has been a big success, but he still is on a six-day schedule. Can you have two top pitchers with that restriction? I guess we will find out.
Watching Pete Alonso talk about playing out the string this year was sad. He was legitimately dejected. He wants to win in the worst way, and his contract has one more full season after this year, so signing him to a long-term contract may not be as easy as we all thought it would be when they were a contender. Will he want to wait until 2026 to contend even if he gets paid? If Alonso walks, the Mets can't fill that hole. That would completely change the dynamic of the franchise. Eppler should be talking to him right away, even though we all know this should have been done before this season began.

Marlins and Phillies Got Better
The Miami Marlins added slugging third baseman, Jake Burger, who has 25 home runs and hit one around 450 feet to dead center at a recent White Sox home game. The Phillies got Tigers starter Michael Lorenzen. The team is going to go with a six-man rotation to try and re-invigorate their staff. Neither team can catch the Braves, but one should get the third Wild Card spot.
