An attempted murder suspect is in custody at the Weld County Jail for allegedly shooting a man during an altercation earlier this month.
Weld County deputies responded to the North Colorado Medical Center on Aug. 13 after receiving a call about a walk-in gunshot victim.
The victim told officers a shooting occurred on M Street, west of 25th Avenue, in unincorporated Weld County — where deputies later located blood.
At the hospital, deputies spoke with a witness, who reported that 35-year-old Saul Calderon-Recendiz owed the victim $200 that he lent him in May, according to the affidavit for Calderon-Recendiz's arrest. The two had recently gotten into a physical altercation because of the money.
Around 2 p.m. Aug. 13, the witness said she went with the victim to the Friendly Village mobile home park, at 35th Avenue and Village Drive in Greeley, where they spotted Calderon-Recendiz. He began yelling at the two inside the car and came up to their vehicle holding a long object with a knife attached to the end of it, the affidavit said.
Calderon-Recendiz jabbed the knife at the driver's side rear passenger window, causing it to break, the witness told law enforcement. Deputies observed this damage to the victim's vehicle in the emergency room parking lot.
The two drove to the M Street location after Calderon-Recendiz fled the area. The victim and witness were at the location for a while, but as they were leaving, Calderon-Recendiz arrived.
Calderon-Recendiz and the victim began yelling at each other in Spanish, so the witness said she did not understand what was said. The witness saw Calderon-Recendiz reach into his waistband and then she heard a gunshot, the affidavit said. He fled the scene in his vehicle.
The witness said she drove the victim to the hospital. He sustained one gunshot wound near his armpit, deputies reported.
At the hospital, deputies interviewed the victim from the intensive care unit. At first, he did not reveal who shot him but later said it was Calderon-Recendiz, according to the affidavit.
Deputies arrested Calderon-Recendiz on Aug. 14 on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, felony menacing and criminal mischief. He remains in custody at the Weld County Jail on a $100,000 bond, online records said.
His next hearing is 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
