Great Driving Roads in Australia are plentiful, but only if you dare to venture beyond the bounds of the large capitals. Hyundai's recent IONIQ 6 launch took in the border country and the pretty landscape therein. One such town, Yackandandah, sits amongst rolling hills in such bucolic beauty as to be almost criminal. The town has gained some considerable note as being the centre of the Indigo Shire project, appropriately named Totally Renewable Yackandandah, or TRY for short. The village of less than 2,000 has come together in community project to restore a burnt-out museum, create the Yackandandah Folk Festival, and to start a community-owned petrol station. Their ambition runs beyond further, with the creativity flowing into thoughts of renewable energy, climate change, and the very real chance that it might even provide a commercial opportunity. With the help of AusNet Services' subsidiary, Mondo, a swift change has occurred. This success has brought into being 3 mirco-grids. This network of buildings uses rooftop solar and batteries, a community power retailer, Indigo Power, and a large community battery, with a second battery planned. Yak 1 is a community battery on the grounds of a local landowner, and was helped by the use of a transformer once part of the family saw mill. Yackandandah is a beautiful village well worth a look. The Star Hotel does a mean smoked meat offering. The road conditions vary so take care, but you will not find better, no matter how far you travel.
