Today is Christmas and we here at Quarter Circles would like to celebrate the season with our top 5 winter stages in Fighting Games as a way to ring in the year
1. Bonne Wonderland - UMVC3
This phenomenal little stage became a crowd favorite in the UMVC3 community. With Tron Bonne's little servo bots working in the snow, this stage has the most Christmas energy out of anything on this list. And if you pay attention you can see the characters' breath on the stage as a nice little bonus.
2. Lin Kuei Palace - Mortal Kombat X
Brrrrrrr, look at all that ice. The home of ice ninja clan, the Lin Kuei had been an important plot point in the Mortal Kombat storyline but it wasnt until Mortal Kombat X that we finally got to play there. Appropriately frosty, this stage comes with two coffins that double as both seance pieces and stage hazards.
3. Kamui Kotan - Samurai Shodown
Based in the northern Hokkaido region of Japan, the name of this stage roughly translate to"the place where God lives", is a fictional village where Nakoruru and her relatives live. And it provides and excellent back drop to the footsie heavy Samurai Shodown with the blood the characters staining the white snow around you as all the animal in the background watch.
4. Summit - Smash Bros Brawl
I was very tempted to put the Melee Ice Climbers stage in here but when reflecting on it, I think this stage stuck around longer for a reason. It is a the epitome of casual smash. The odd but fairly placed platforms, the slippery ice bottom, the indestructible roof that gives room for busted item based combos, the slated edge that can literally break. And best of all the whole stages can seemingly fall off a cliff and tilt sideways. Truely a casual classic in Smash and a perfect winter pick.
No wobbling though.
5. Suzaku Countryside- Street Fighter Alpha 2
Ryu's stages have always had this elegant simplicity to them, much like Ryu themselves. But this secret Street Fighter Alpha 2 stage is in my opinion the best winter stage the Street Fighter franchise has ever made (yes even more than any of Zangief's stages). The giant full moon obscured by the near barren tree and the freshly laid snow covering the Japanese mountainsides. And the night time abeyance makes it cut above other stages and some of 90's Capcom best pixel art work. This stage remain a desktop wallpaper for many for a reason..
And thats everything. So from all of us at Quarter Circles, have a merry Christmas and the happy New Year!
