Guinness World Records have his record as slightly less than that, as they shaved off four to put his tally at 1279.

The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF), an international organisation that collects football statistics, put him down in 11th place in the all-time official goalscoring charts.
They have the Santos legend's tally at 778 in 846 games. That makes him not even the top scoring Brazilian.

Romario is listed as scoring 784 times in his career.
Lionel Messi has 822 and Cristiano Ronaldo is on 837, meanwhile at the top of the list is Erwin Helmchen on 987.
How many World Cup goals did Pele score?
Pele won the World Cup a record three times as a player in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
Across 14 matches he played, he netted 12 times. That puts him joint sixth on the all-time list, alongside Kylian Mbappe.
Ahead of him on 13 are Messi and Just Fontaine, Gerd Muller has 14, Ronaldo Nazario on 15 and leading the way is Miroslav Klose with 16.
