100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of December 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:
• Nearly 300 federal prisoners were released by the Free State Military Headquarters on Christmas Eve on their promises not to engage the military as weapon targets. They all signed a pledge not to bear arms against the military during the Christmas season.
• The Camp Fire Girls of Greeley joined in a national campaign to help shut-ins, orphans and needy children to celebrate Christmas. The girls provided Christmas stockings filled with toys and treats, then sang Christmas carols for the children
• Too much Christmas cheer resulted in the arrest of three Greeley men on Christmas day. All three men were drunk from illegal whiskey. And arrested by police. One man was arrested at the Winter Dance Hall, where he was causing a disturbance with the professional dancers.
• A woman complained that a strange man abducted her from the streets last night and took her to a hiding place. She escaped by biting off his thumb. Police arrested the man when they found him suffering from the bite, with the end of his thumb still in his glove.
• The Knights of Pythias, the Elks Club of Greeley and the Salvation Army reached the needy people of Weld County this week with candy for the children and food baskets for their parents. Between 3 and 4 o'clock on Christmas, more than 700 bags of candy were given to the children.
• Now is the time to wish a Merry Christmas to all those good people we know. Except for those who call Christmas X-Mas.
• For rent or sale: four room house at 1406 14th. House has lights in all rooms, bath eat, gas and laundry. Sleeping porch also included, adults only.
• Christmas sales this year may exceed all other years before, including 1919, which was recorded as the highest in sales records. Much of those sales could be due to the availability of railroad cars hauling the gifts from around the country into Greeley and Colorado.
• Unusually warm weather has hit Greeley lately. Thermometers on College Hill this week hit 76 degrees above zero. Long-time residents of Greeley said the temperatures were very unusual, especially with the amount of snow we received.
• Runnell & Runnell's, Chiropractors, will be open New Year's Day for the treatment of toothaches, scarlet fever, gout, headaches, cold grippe, mental depression, lumbago and all other diseases. Try our health services. Better health means better earning power for your investments.
