Nolan Siegel will join HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing for the 2023 Indy Lights schedule on a full-time basis. The race team made the announcement in the form of a press release on Tuesday.
The organization feels Siegel has a bright future ahead of him and that 2023 will has the potential to be special.
"Nolan performed well at Laguna and during our new driver evaluation day," added HMD Motorsports General Manager Mike Maurini. "I am expecting some big things from him in 2023 as he has surrounded himself with all the right people to have success."
Siegel, 17, has climbed his way through the Road to Indy ladder over the last few seasons. In 2021, the California native scored two wins in 18 starts in Indy Pro 2000 Championship competition and he finished the year fourth in the championship standings.
Siegel also dipped his toes into the Indy Lights water as he competed in the final two Indy Lights events of the 2022 season at WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca with HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing.
In those two starts, Siegel finished ninth and 10th respectively.
The young racer feels that experience in 2022 will pay dividends toward getting him ready for his full-time run in 2023.
"I was thrown into the deep end a little bit at Laguna Seca but enjoyed the experience and learned a lot," explained Siegel. "The Indy Lights car is a whole new beast. It is heavier, faster, and takes a slightly different driving style. The tires had a different grip level than I was used to, and the push-to-pass option was also something new to me. After the weekend was done, I looked back and it was definitely not the results I would have wanted, but I also wouldn't want to go into the first race of 2023 having not had the experience."
In addition to running the final two races of the 2022 Indy Lights season, Siegel will now participate in a series of off-season testing in the Indy Lights car to prepare for his rookie season in the series.
Siegel marks the fourth driver announced to the eight-driver full-time Indy Lights roster for HMD Motorsports for the 2023 season. Siegel joins Christian Bogle, Josh Green and Danial Frost, who were all announced previously.
Four more drivers remain for the organization to announce before the 2023 Indy Lights season kicks off.
