Arthur Melo has undergone successful surgery on his thigh, for an injury sustained during training. Since joining Liverpool on deadline day on a loan deal from Juventus, the Brazilian's appearances have been drastically limited.
He has only played 13 minutes for the first team, coming off the bench in the Champions League defeat against Napoli. He was expected to be in the squad for the game against Arsenal today, and the Champions League clash against Rangers in midweek.
Arthur Melo to return to training in 2023
The midfielder was signed as cover for Jordan Henderson and Thiago, who had suffered injuries early in the season. However, the 26-year-old tore his quad muscle while running in training on Monday. And now, will be out for the next two to three months at the very least.
Initial assessment after the procedure suggests that he will only be available in 2023. And as a result, any hopes of making the Brazil World Cup squad have evaporated for the player.
After completing his move, Arthur lacked match fitness and did double training sessions during the international break to get back in shape. He also played with the juniors in order to find his fitness. And just when it seemed like he'd be getting regular game time, an injury has hampered his progress and sent him back to square one.
