Barcelona's president Joan Laporta has claimed that a European Super League is needed to tackle 'financial doping' from some clubs.
Laporta also said that a revised Super League would no longer be a closed competition for founder members, as was the case with the original format that fell through last year.
Laporta believes that the European Super League is needing to tackle financial doping
The European Super League did not go down well at all with Premier League fans
The influx of state-run clubs such as Newcastle are a big concern for Laporta
Reports from the Daily Telegraph have claimed that founders Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are planning to sound out clubs around Europe regarding a new proposal, however this will hinge on the outcome of a case against UEFA and FIFA in the European Court of Justice with the outcome expected in December.
Real Madrid's president Florentino Pérez and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli are also backing the prospect of a revived proposal.
However a new Super League could be made without any English clubs with new Premier League rules almost certainly ruling them out of competing.
The reasons for the proposal is down to the uneven distribution of wealth within the European game with clubs in the English Premier League attracting far bigger sums of money in broadcasting revenue than their rivals in countries such as Italy, Spain and France.
With clubs such as Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle now bringing eye-watering levels of wealth to the game, Laporta believes that steps must be taken to level the playing field.
As quoted by The Times, the Barcelona president said: "The financial situation of football clubs, which we must remember are the only ones who assume financial risks and costs, is very worrying.
Real Madrid President Perez is also a big advocate of the European Super League
"We have had to resort to the financial levers that have been necessary to sustain our future. That is why we have supported the creation of the Super League from the beginning.
"We still firmly believe that it is the solution that football needs, especially football in the European Union which, unfortunately, is not having the best of times, immersed in a negative trend in terms of television audiences, stadium attendance and the difficulty of attracting new [fans], especially among young people, who are seduced by other entertainment.
"In addition, Barca's financial situation has been aggravated in recent years by another problem that no one has been able to put a stop to until now, the financial doping of certain competing clubs.
"This issue will indeed be addressed by the Super League and this is one of the main reasons why we support the project."
