Antonio Conte insists Tottenham need further transfer windows if they're going to compete with football's biggest names, despite the club's big-spending summer.
The north London side have come in for some criticism in recent weeks after failing to win three of their last four matches in all competitions.
Conte believes that Tottenham have work to do in the transfer market
Tottenham are sitting in third in the Premier League but have still come in for criticism
With the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday being followed by an underwhelming 0-0 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, questions have been asked around Conte's style of play and football philosophy.
Spurs have been branded 'boring' to watch this season, and the Italian coach is also facing questions over an apparent lack of trust in his players and squad depth.
While Tottenham do sit third in the Premier League, it remains to be seen whether Spurs will have what it takes to keep pace with the top flight's biggest sides.
And that's something Conte has admitted will be decided by how they perform in future transfer windows as they look to close the gap to England and Europe's biggest sides.
Conte said after his side's bore draw: "We weren't able last season to face two competitions.
"Now we have to go step-by-step, have patience, take time, you need to have time and to build an important squad to face a competition like the Champions League.
Give it a few transfer windows and Conte will be hoping that Spurs can mix it with the best
"If you think, 'Yeah I want to make some rotations' and it is a bit difficult."
Conte's complaints come after Spurs spent £172million to strengthen the squad in the summer.
That outlay includes the £20m arrival of English full-back Djed Spence, who has played just one minute of football since his move from Nottingham Forest.
"We know this situation with the club and the club knows very well we need time and patience, to try to go step by step," Conte continued.
"I spoke about the transfer market, that we needed more transfer markets to reach a good level. We know this.
"At the same time we want to be competitive, to try to do everything."
