Rennes have completed the signing of Xeka on a free transfer, as confirmed by the club on their official site and social media accounts. The midfielder has signed a two-year deal with the French side, joining them after his contract with Lille expired at the end of the previous season.
The injury to Baptiste Santamaria seemingly forced the transfer to take place, and Xeka now has a chance to establish himself in a new project.
Xeka joins Rennes on a free transfer
In a press release, Rennes CEO Olivier Cloarec said, "He is a very experienced midfielder, who most notably has proven himself at Lille. I knew him at Dijon. He is a versatile player who likes going forward. He also has significant European experience that will benefit us this season. The club needed reinforcements following Baptiste's injury and so we are very happy to welcome Xeka into our team."
The Portuguese midfielder spent four years with Lille, helping them win the Ligue 1 title a couple of years ago. He won't be eligible for the Europa League group stages due to his late signing. However, if Rennes make it to the knockout stages, he will be eligible to play from January.
