The Windsor Town Board this week referred an open space sales tax increase to the November ballot, allowing voters to decide if they want pay 2.5 cents on a $10 purchase of taxable items to support funding initiatives in the Open Space & Trails Strategic Plan.
If approved, the local sales tax rate would increase from 3.95% to 4.20%. The town currently relies on private residential and commercial development dedicating portions of their land to the town as trails and open space.
The town board made the decision on the referral on Aug. 22. Earlier this month, the Weld RE-4 School District for students in Windsor, Severance and west Greeley referred a $271 million bond package and $5 million mill levy override tax to the November ballot.
In July, the town found 64% of surveyed voters would support a sales tax to fund open space land acquisition. The survey was distributed to a random group of registered voters to gauge community support for the plan. Surveys were collected online and by phone.
Results from the town's public survey are posted online at windsorgov.com/ostsurveyresults.
