At Gamescom 2022, sony announced a new customizable PlayStation 5 controller. Called the DualSense Edge, the company described the controller as their first " high-performance, ultra-customizable controller," and will allow players to create custom controls for their games.
Few things stood out more at the launch of the PlayStation 5 than the DualSense controller. It not only had more heft than its predecessor—the PlayStation 4's DualShock 4—but it also boasted impressive features, including pressure-sensitive haptic triggers.
The latter feature was noticeably felt in games such as Housemarque's Returnal, where players could literally feel the controller rumble to the beat of the raindrops in certain segments; or in Sony's own Gran Turismo 7, where the triggers provided the kind of "pedal" feedback usually reserved for expensive sim-racing set-ups.
According to Gamescom host Geoff Keighly, the DualSense Edge will feature "custom control profiles, customized to your playstyle." Sony expounded on this in a blog post, stating that the customizable PlayStation 5 controller would allow players to remap button inputs and deadzones and save these to individual profiles for different users.
"The opportunity to create the DualSense Edge wireless controller was a dream come true for our team. We wanted to build on the legacy of iconic PlayStation controllers by creating a controller that empowers players to experiment and personalize elements based on their own unique playstyle – whether they are a competitive gamer or someone who just enjoys having more options to customize their play," stated Art Director Daisuke Kurihara. "The DualSense Edge wireless controller also features a number of thoughtful design touches that we hope players will enjoy, including a distinct DualSense controller-inspired black-and-white color scheme and a unique PlayStation Shapes pattern on the touch pad and trigger surfaces."
The DualSense Edge will allow for more than just button remapping, Sony also confirmed that players would be able to swap out the stick caps and back buttons. This customizable PlayStation 5 controller will be able to use three types of swappable stick caps—standard, high dome and low dome—to help players stay comfortable while maintaining grip and stability in-game.
More importantly, this customizable PlayStation 5 controller will also allow players to swap out analog stick modules. The most obvious benefit of this would be allowing players to change out their analog sticks once they inevitably start to drift—a known issue with the Alps Alpine analog stick modules used in most first-party gamepads. Replacement analog stick modules will be sold separately by Sony. (Read: Sony announces official PlayStation 5 colored faceplates)
Beyond that, this feature should allow Sony to provide other, unique analog stick modules for specific games, should they decide to do so. There's also the possibility of third-party manufacturers making their own unique modules.
As for when the DualSense Edge will come out, Sony has yet to reveal any specific release and pricing information. In the meantime, check out the short reveal trailer for the controller below.
