Steven Gerrard has removed Tyrone Mings as Aston Villa captain for the 2022/23 season.
The club announced that John McGinn would skipper for the new campaign.
Mings is no longer Villa skipper
Gerrard explained his decision and how he feels that it will allow Mings to focus on his own game.
He said: "Naturally, I have had to have a discussion with Tyrone Mings and have explained my reasons for making this decision.
"More importantly, I believe that not having the responsibility of the captaincy will allow Tyrone to focus more on his own game which can only benefit him and the team."
The Aston Villa boss also gave huge praise to McGinn, while also explaining why Emi Martinez has been named vice-captain and Ashley Young as club captain.
Gerrard added: "John has demonstrated that he is ready to take on the captaincy through his performances on the pitch combined with his attitude and application in training.
"He is a popular member of the dressing room who sets high standards and expectations of himself.
Gerrard decided to remove Mings as captain
"Emi is a respected senior member of the squad while Ashley Young's experience speaks for itself and he is the perfect ambassador for the first team."
Mings also sent a classy message on social media after the club made the announcement.
He wrote: "For me this isn't about John or I, it's about what's right for Aston Villa.
"I have no issues with the manager's decision; I've loved leading this team. Anyone who knows @jmcginn7 knows how infectious he is and it will be an honour to play underneath his captaincy."
Former Aston Villa skipper Gabby Agbonlahor believes Mings will be hurting after the decision, but it will not change the way he plays.
He told talkSPORT: "I think he will be a bit upset. When he became captain of Aston Villa, you could tell he enjoyed it.
"The talking from the back, the armband, it's a proud moment. To lose it, yes he would be upset, but it doesn't change much.
"He will still be talking and still be shouting at McGinn to get back. Just because you haven't got an armband it doesn't matter for me."
McGinn will have the armband for the 2022/23 campaign
Agbonlahor also revealed that a similar thing happened to him when Paul Lambert became Villa manager in 2012.
He added: "When I got it taken off me by Paul Lambert when he came in to Villa, I didn't mind not having it.
"As a striker, I didn't mind being captain but I wasn't too fussed about it. I wanted to score goals and create goals."
