The current Manchester United team has been branded the club's 'worst in the history of the Premier League' after a defeat to Arsenal that has all-but ended their top-four hopes.
And not only that, the 3-1 loss at Emirates Stadium resigned the Red Devils to their worst away run in the league in 41 years - a sign of how bad things have become for the Old Trafford giants.
Man United players looked devastated as they suffered another defeat on the road
United played well, but were undone by their continuing defensive frailties as the Gunners pretty much ended the visitors' Champions League hopes while boosting their own.
It's a fifth defeat in eight games for Ralf Rangnick's team, and it follows their humiliating 4-0 defeat to arch rivals Liverpool which highlighted just how big the gulf is between the current United side and the Premier League's leading clubs.
But if Tuesday's result was bad, the defeat to Arsenal underscored the size of the task faced by Erik ten Hag when he takes over in the summer.
Manchester United have a worse defensive record than relegation-threatened Burnley this term, having conceded 51 goals in 34 games.
Their run of four consecutive defeats on the road is their worst in over four decades, with their away record this season reading six wins, five draws and six defeats - with 30 goals shipped.
Astonishingly, this is a team that was unbeaten away from home in the league last season, and it could all end with United finishing the campaign with their lowest points tally in the Premier League era.
A top-four finish is crucial for Manchester United's rebuilding plans under Ten Hag, which is why this defeat to Arsenal is so damaging to the club's immediate future.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's game, talkSPORT's Weekend Sports Breakfast host Tony Cascarino said: "Manchester United's worst return in the Premier League is 64 points, and if they lose this game they might not reach that this season.
"If they don't, that would make this Manchester United team the worst Manchester United team in the history of the Premier League."
The Red Devils have 12 points to play for in their four remaining games, which means they can finish above that tally with 66 points.
But few would tip the Red Devils to end their season with four straight wins on their current form.
Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty in a forgettable outing for the stand-in captain, with Harry Maguire dropped to the bench
talkSPORT pundit Dean Ashton certainly isn't one of those few, with the ex-striker admitting Ten hag has his work cut out for him to improve the team mentality and morale of this group.
"It was so important for Man United not to lose this game if they wanted the top-four, and I don't see it now, the gap is too big," he said.
"There seems to be a spirit between the players and the staff at Arsenal, and you just don't see that at Manchester United.
"That's the job of Erik ten Hag, to put a style of play that the players buy into, that makes them want to work for each other, that is identifiable for the players and actually quite simple.
"I think this group of players needs a really simple structure and a way of playing they can understand.
Rangnick was installed as interim manager in November, and has guided Man United to ten wins from 25 games in charge
Ten Hag will be tasked with getting Manchester United's rebuild back on track
"They're quality players, they haven't just all of a sudden become so bad that you cannot keep them. I think a manager who goes in there and inspires these players will find that actually there is a decent squad of players there.
"With some players going out who don't want to be at the club and some fresh players coming in with the right attitude, I think things can turn around much quicker than people think.
"Although I don't think the change will be instant."
