On April 11-13, 2022 the Pennsylvania Future Business Leaders of America's State Leadership Conferences took place at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. At the SLC students from across the Pennsylvania Chapter of FBLA came together to compete in the events of performances or tests at the state level.
Our Oxford Area High School students who qualified to compete at the SLC spent their time participating in their events, attending varying workshops and exploring Hershey's Chocolate World during their free time. On April 12 the Award Ceremony was held and the following students placed Top 10 in their events:
- Maddie Soule 10th place, Broadcast Journalism
- Daniel Nowland, Cade Pearson and Emma Neskie 8th place, Sports & Entertainment Management
- Kenna Mullins, 3rd place 3D Animation
- Abby Oliver 1st place, Business Communication
- Logan Spano 1st place, Introduction to Business Communication
- Savannah Haws 8th place Open Event, Non-Profit Management
Our OAHS students Abby Oliver, Logan Spano and Kenna Mullins qualified to attend the 2022 National FBLA Conference that is being held in Chicago during June. At the National Leadership Conference these students will gather to compete in their events, have the opportunity to network and attend more workshops, and listen to guest speakers to learn more about business oriented careers.
I was given the opportunity to interview the OAHS President of FBLA, Kenna Mullins, who attended the conference and has taken the role of leading OAHS' FBLA club throughout the entirety of the year. To Mullins, the awards ceremony excited her most. She described seeing different FBLA chapters from the state amidst the booming music and colorful lights. Kenna shared that:
"the cheers that you hear when the names come up on screen are full of genuine excitement and pride"
Kenna highlights the various activities students could be involved in at the conference as she explained:
"It was also great to be in Hershey; we went to Chocolate World and all had a really fun time together. I also really enjoyed talking to other members from many areas and watching the competitions"
After placing 3rd in her event at the SLC Kenna described the anticipation of going to Nationals with two other students as she illustrates:
"I'm most excited to go to Chicago though since I've never been there. The convention will be at the top convention center in North America, McCormick Place, which has over 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space! It truly is a once in a lifetime experience and an honor to be competing at the national level"
As Mullins is competing in the 3D animation competitive event she has spent a lot of time creating her project she is most excited to see how her:
"…production compares with the others" and to "…network with other motivated students from all over the country"
As an active FBLA member throughout all four of her high school education Kenna shared the various values and possibilities the FBLA organization has brought to her explaining:
"There are so many unique paths and opportunities for students who are involved"
Kenna shared that FBLA has helped her develop an interest in her future career as Mullins stated that FBLA:
"…has allowed me to see that my dream of pursuing my passion for fitness by opening a gym is within reach. The wisdom and skills I've acquired from FBLA experiences such as workshops will stay with me for life especially on my entrepreneurial journey"
Kenna's involvement in FBLA will continue intolate June at the National Leadership Conference where three of our students will compete and represent OAHS.
