Charlie Austin has backed Harry Maguire following the criticism aimed at the England and Manchester United defender amid the viral video of him stopping the ball in rondos.

The centre-back has been a big talking point on social media, for ending the game with fans reacting after Jordan Henderson's initial confusion at Maguire's actions.

Maguire came under fire on social media for the clip

Austin though has come to Maguire's defence, insisting the reaction has been ridiculous

The England players managed to rack up more than 40 passes while men in the middle Nick Pope and Jack Grealish struggled to disrupt their rhythm.

That was until Maguire came along, taking an extra touch, which allowed Pope and Grealish a breather to jump in.

The group in possession, which included the likes of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, appeared a bit confused

Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson – who was heard counting out the successful passes – stopped dead to glare at his international teammate and appeared to say to him: "What are you doing?"

Since the clip came out, a lot of reaction has followed, which has been labelled as 'ridiculous' by Maguire's Three Lions teammate Tyrone Mings.

And Austin was keen to add to the Aston Villa captain's statement, as he detailed how rondos work.

The centre-back has never let England down

"The way a picture and a video comes across now across all the platforms just gets taken in a completely wrong direction," Austin said on Drive.

"Everything he said there [Mings] is all true, you do a rondo, 20 passes you stay in, nutmeg you stay in, 40 passes you're in for two [rounds].

"That's what it is, he stopped the ball to give them a breather.

"Now all of a sudden he [Mings] has had to come out to defend him, we're having a conversation about a rondo that he's just stopped the ball to give them a breather.

Maguire's performances for club Man United have come under scrutiny in recent weeks and month

However, Maguire is one of England's most consistent defenders, and has played 41 times for his country

"Even if he gives the ball away there, just takes a touch to let them win one, they've still got to stay in for two.

"I know this goes back to people taking their foot off Harry Maguire, but that doesn't help the situation does it? The way social media and media have spread that...

"I think for club, it's out there for everybody to make an opinion, and in the world we live in, everyone makes an opinion.

"He plays for one of the biggest football clubs globally doesn't he? He's also the captain.

"You have to be a certain character, I'm not judging his character at all, but you have to take on those responsibilities to play centre-half for Man United, to be captain.

"He also goes to England and performs very well for us, in the Euros he was a solid seven/eight out of ten.

"Maybe when he's with England its less pressure, I know that might sound a bit daft but going there, with all the players around him and he seems to have a good relationship with the manager."
