Andy Murray knocked out the 21st seed at the Australian Open as he made an emotional return to Melbourne.

Three years ago, it looked as though it would be the end of the road for the three-time Grand Slam winner.

Murray could not contain his emotion after winning in Melbourne

Murray made an emotional return to the Australian Open

He expressed his retirement fears and we did not think we would see him on a tennis court many more times, if at all.

But a hip resurfacing operation later, he came back to the Australian Open to knock out the 21st seed, Nikoloz Basilashvili, over five sets.

Murray took the win 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in the near four hour battle with the Georgian.

You could see exactly what it meant to the five-time Australian Open finalist after hitting the winning point.

He screamed in delight and let out all the emotion that had built up.

Speaking on court after his victory, Murray said: "It's amazing. Been a tough three or four years to get back to here.

"Amazing to be back to win a five-set battle like that, couldn't ask for any more."

Murray will play Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel in the second round on Thursday.

He was the second Briton to make it through to the second round, as Heather Watson won in her match on Tuesday morning.
