A Colorado-based nonprofit that provides home-delivered, medically-tailored meals to people facing severe illness is expanding the program to 14 towns in Weld, Boulder and Douglas Counties.

For 30-years, Project Angel Heart has been granting severely ill Coloradans  nutritious meals in order for them to stay home and healthy, according to the nonprofit's release. The program has served people living with HIV/AIDS, kidney disease, cancer, congestive heart failure, COVID-19, COPD and other illnesses.

Due to the expansion of the organization, Project Angel Heart now reaches more than 1,000 square miles up and down Interstate 25, and provides medically-tailored meals to cities from Colorado Springs, to Denver and into Boulder and Weld Counties.

"Every day, thousands of Coloradans living with severe illness go without the nutrition they need to improve their health and wellbeing," CEO of Project Angel Heart Owen Ryan said. "Their illness leads to exhaustion and financial pressure that make finding, buying and preparing nutritious food difficult. That's where Project Angel Heart comes in," said Ryan. "In the next five years, we are aiming to grow our program to reach even more of our neighbors in need. This is the first step."

Project Angel Heart has served more than 550,000 meals to over 4,000 people facing illnesses over the last year, with the expansion the nonprofit plans to serve over 600,000 meals in the next 12 months, the release said.

"It's been an honor to support Project Angel Heart's mission for many years, and I'm very excited to serve new clients in my home city of Boulder," Project Angel Heart board member and owner of the Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery, Kevin Daly said. "As a restaurateur, I know that food is a source of comfort, and for Project Angel Heart meal recipients, it's also a lifeline."

Since 1991, when the first 12 lasagna meals were delivered to people in Denver living with HIV/AIDS, Project Angel Heart has continued preparing and delivering free meals designed specifically to help manage life-threatening illnesses.

The program has since expanded its services to deliver medically-tailored meals to all different types of health conditions, according to the release. Earlier this year, Project Angel Heart celebrated its 8th millionth meal delivery.
