Gus Poyet has urged Newcastle not to sack Steve Bruce before his 1,000th match in management.

Newcastle will play their first match since their change in ownership when they face Tottenham at St James' Park on Sunday.

Will Bruce still be in the job?

It will also bring up the landmark match for their manager, should he stay in the job.

A number of names have been linked with his position since the takeover was completed, including Lucien Favre, Antonio Conte and Frank Lampard.

talkSPORT understands Bruce is likely to be in the technical area for the match and Poyet, who once managed Newcastle's arch rivals Sunderland, hopes that remains the case.

On the prospect of Bruce being dismissed before his 1,000th match, Poyet told talkSPORT: "It would be terrible… I don't think there will be any sentiments."

A number of fans have never taken to Bruce, who was appointed Newcastle boss in the summer of 2019

It appears to be a question of when Bruce, who isn't rated by a number of Magpies supporters, will be relieved of his duties and Poyet shed insight into what managers experience when they get the boot.

The Uruguayan, who also managed Brighton, revealed he once went into hiding after being sacked.

Poyet added: "The feeling is terrible. We're all different, I don't know how Steve will take it but it's a terrible feeling. To go in in the morning and by lunchtime you could be gone...

"You know what is the worst part [for Bruce]? You've probably been coaching your whole life to have that chance to spend £150million and then when he's that close, maybe he goes!

Poyet was sacked as Brighton manager while working as a pundit during a live football match

"I think sometimes you get used to it but it still hurts a lot when it happens. I remember my first or second sacking, it was difficult for me.

"I went into hiding for four or five days, you don't want to go out and for people to ask you about it because either you can't say or it's something bad.

"Unfortunately we can't get used to that part of the game."
