It was widely reported just a couple days ago that Star PG Chris Paul would opt out of the final year of his contract. He made this move so that the Phoenix Suns bring back Chris Paul on a longer deal. Paul has now signed a four year, $120 million contract that will keep him with the team until he is 40 years old. Both Paul and the Suns were "motivated to make a new deal."
The expectation was that the Suns bring back Chris Paul once free agency opened and they did not waste any time making it. Paul was set to make $44.2 million for this season. It would have been the last year of a four year deal that he had signed with the Houston Rockets back before the 2018 season. He has spent one year in Phoenix after the Suns traded Kelly Oubre Jr., Ricky Rubio, Ty Jerome, Jalen Lecque, and a 2022 first round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It did not take Paul long to get things moving for the Suns this season alongside Devin Booker. For the first time in over a decade the Suns made the playoffs. The would go all the way to the NBA Finals before losing to the Milwaukee Bucks. This was the first finals appearance for the franchise since 1993. This also become the first time in Chris Paul's 16 year career that he made the finals.
