Sterling softball is still rolling late into spooky season.
After securing second place at the regional they hosted, the Tigers' efforts were still sufficient to earn them a spot at the Class 3A state tournament, which is slated to start on Friday at Aurora Sports Park. Sterling will enter the playoffs as the No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 Sierra in the first round.
Sierra jumped five spots in the seeding after upsetting No. 4 Delta in their 3A Site 4 championship with a 10-4 finale. They boast an explosive offense with 228 runs and a collective batting average of .408, all while blasting 15 home runs.
On paper, the Tigers match up quite well with 255 runs and a .405 batting average to their names, and will enter the penultimate tournament with a 16-8-1 record. Play will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Merino football blasts Caliche
This season hasn't always been easy for Merino football, but when bright spots emerge, they shine brilliantly.
On Friday on their own home field, the Rams took control early and dominated Caliche en route to a 58-6 victory, netting 46 points in the first half alone. They extended the lead to 52-0 before allowing the Buffaloes to get on the board, then sealed the deal with one more rushing score.
The Buffaloes struggled to contain Merino's run all night, as the Rams scored on the ground in nearly every instance, save for one passing touchdown late in the second quarter.
With the win, Merino improved to 3-4, but it has an uphill battle to gain another win in the regular season. First, they'll face off with No. 7 Akron this Friday before going head-to-head with the baddest of them all, No. 1 Haxtun, for the regular season finale.
