October 1 marks the 31st annual Greeley Life Chain.
I've often wished there was a civil way to discuss the abortion issue. The personhood amendment, that sought to establish personhood for the unborn a few years back, taught me a few things.
In Colorado, despite a well-funded campaign by the abortion industry, a little over a third voted to end abortion. The other two-thirds obviously favor abortion, but most want restrictions.
According to a 2023 Gallup poll, 52% of voters call themselves pro-choice while 41% are pro-life. This is why democrats always make it a contentious election issue, with debate replaced by name-calling and emotion-based sound bites.
The affluent abortion industry makes generous political contributions which further exacerbates the issue. I feel sorry for the babies who die and the mothers and fathers who have to live with what they've done, but I gave up years ago on having respectful debate.
The next best thing is a peaceful demonstration with pro-life people praying and holding signs.
Are pro-life demonstrations still necessary? Didn't the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade settle the matter?
Six months after Roe was overturned, the Guttmacher Institute, a research arm of the abortion industry, reported 26 states had either banned, or were likely to ban, abortion.
No such good fortune in Colorado, where our governor and state legislature immediately created one of the most permissive abortion bills in the country. The bill made us an 'abortion vacation destination' for people in states with more restrictive laws.
Of the six states touching our border, only Kansas and New Mexico were considered likely to continue allowing the practice.
Guttmacher states that, between 2015 and 2019, the annual number of abortions worldwide was 76 million. In 2020 in the U.S., more than 930,000 babies were aborted. That figure doesn't include pill abortions that, according to the Centers for Disease Control, now account for more than 50%, so the actual total is probably 2 million.
Year after year, the holocaust continues. The worldwide total since the infamous 1973 Roe decision is anyone's guess, but 1.5 billion is a very conservative estimate.
In the U.S., the total is well over 70 million. I don't know about you, but that makes me cringe.
Currently, there is an attempt to censor anyone with conservative or Christian values. A nice, law-abiding, prayerful group of Christians demonstrating against abortion lets those who would interfere with second amendment rights know their tactics aren't working.
The more of us there are, the stronger the message.
Judges, politicians, talk show hosts and editorial writers don't rescue many babies. The main way they are saved is on a person-to-person basis, where a relative or friend intervenes; by counselors at pregnancy resource centers; or, by someone who picks up a sign and takes a stand.
The Life Chain is an opportunity to do just that by joining with other Christians to pray against abortion and the spirit behind it.
Join us from 2:30-3:30 p.m. October 1 at 2222 23rd Avenue in Greeley. It really does make a difference.
