Summertime is the perfect time to think about lounging on your deck or patio, relaxing by the pool, warming yourself in the sun and hosting barbecues for the whole family.
It's also the perfect time to consider a revamp of your outdoor space to make a fabulous oasis to relax and entertain in. Keeping the lawn trimmed and watered is well and good, but there is more you can do when it comes to décor and design.
Kellie Burke of Kellie Burke Interiors shared her top tips on how to design an outdoor space that will elevate your summer lifestyle.
Harmonize with nature
Burke said one of the key elements is to seamlessly blend your space with nature.
"Embrace the natural beauty of your surroundings by incorporating organic materials such as tone, lush greenery and potted plants for color," she said.
Create a cozy seating area
A comfortable seating area to relax and gather with friends and family is crucial to your outdoor space.
"Opt for plush outdoor sofas and lounge chairs upholstered with weather-resistant cushions, decorated with soft throws and pillows in rich textures and colors," Burke said. "Don't forget to provide ample shade options with stylish umbrellas or pergolas for those seeking respite from the sun."
She also suggested adding accents and accessories such as decorative planters and outdoor artwork. Blankets, insect repellant and elegant server ware also ensure your guests' comfort.
Illuminate with ambient lighting
Lighting is especially important in outdoor spaces so you can party well after dark with friends.
"Incorporate a combination of ambient lighting such as solar powered string lights suspended above seating areas or surrounding trees and accent lighting such as elegant lanterns or chic battery-operated table lamps," Burke said. "Consider incorporating candles or hidden LED strips to accentuate architectural elements as well as a gas fire table for some extra warmth."
Gourmet kitchen and bar
Sometimes it's just not enough to only have a grill. An outdoor kitchen and bar bring your outdoor space to the next level. These could include grills, pizza ovens and wine coolers along with countertops and storage solutions.
"Complete the setup with a sleek outdoor bar and comfortable stools to create a social hub for culinary delights," Burke said.
Outdoor entertainment systems
No one wants to just play music on their phone while outside with guests. Burke suggests elevating entertainment by integrating audio and visual systems.
"Outdoor speakers discreetly hidden within foliage, weatherproof televisions and outdoor projection screens can all enhance the ambience and allow you to host unforgettable movie nights or dance parties under the stars," she said.
Alluring water features
The sound of running water isn't just relaxing; it can also make for a wonderful centerpiece.
"Consider installing a contemporary fountain, a cascading waterfall or a shimmering pool," Burke said. "Incorporate seating areas around these features to create intimate conversation spots and provide a soothing soundtrack for your summer gatherings."
