Classified as The Godfather, Kevin Samuels helped shape an acronym to combat various fallacies when discussing topics called S.I.GN. language.
Shame, Insult(s), Guilt, and Need (to be right). Here's some examples.
Person A - I'm gonna move to X place to better myself and to see what the place has to offer
Person B - Oh, you don't want to live there. The cost of living is too high, the crime is bad, and...
Person B is using sign language. Shaming the location without asking the right questions first. Also this tactic is typical for people who only go off what they see/hear/read off the media and detractors.
Person A - I want to visit X location across the ocean and find someone abroad.
Person B - Oh, you're better off dating someone here in the US. Those (wo)men are known for only dating to get a green card and leaving. Also...
Person B is Shaming and Insulting a culture they have no prior knowledge outside what's said on the media.
Person A and B are having a discussion over a topic both have knowledge over. Person A keeps using the phrase "go look it up" without any viable sources. Person B uses verifiable sources, and person A disregards any and all sources they don't agree with.
Person A needs to be right instead of verifying information in case there are changes or potential misinformation.
Person A - I'm moving to a new location.
Person B - No don't leave! What if I get sick? How will you take care of yourself if...
Person B is shaming the person instead of asking the right questions first. Also, part of growth requires relocation.
As a personal tip, when someone uses SIGN language, I just end the conversation because it's no longer about understanding and seeing different perspectives.
