University of Northern Colorado's national champion is headed to Poland for an international competition.
Junior Andrew Alirez competes for Team USA at the Ziolkowski, Pytlasinski, Poland Open early Sunday morning.
He will participate in the 65 kilogram freestyle competition in Warsaw. Several fellow Big 12 wrestlers will compete as well, with Oklahoma State's Daton Fix, Dustin Plott and Braden Thompson making the trip.
The Greeley local is coming off of his 28-0 season and NCAA title in the 141-pound weight class. He previously won gold in the 2018 Pan American games, also in the 65 kg class.
Alirez is set to begin competition on Sunday, according to Team USA, with matches starting at 11 a.m. local time/3 a.m. MT. The medal matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. local time/10 a.m. MT.
