Colorado State Patrol (CSP) reveals people in their '40s had the largest increase in fatal and injury crashes caused by lane violations in 2022.
In 2019, there were 450 fatal and injury crashes caused by lane violations in Colorado, according to a CSP news release. This particular type of crash has steadily increased over the years with CSP troopers investigating 635 in 2022.
Most age demographics experienced an increase in this category but the age 40-49 saw an alarming 32% increase from 2021 to 2022, the release said. The other highest percentage increases were a 19% spike for the 60-69 age group and a 12% spike for the 18-21 age group.
"We may never fully know all the life circumstances feeding into the increase of lane violations by these drivers, especially with our more experienced motorists," CSP Chief Matthew C. Packard said. "Life can be busy and messy but allowing anything to pull your focus off the road or driving while intoxicated is unacceptable. It's time to get honest with ourselves and take responsibility."
Lane violations can be an indicator for driving over the speed limit, distracted driving or driving while intoxicated, the release said.
In addition to age groups, the CSP lane violation data looked at the top counties for injuries and fatalities. Weld County is No. 5 in Colorado, with 29 lane violation crashes that resulted in fatalities or injuries in 2022.
