A motorist died Friday morning after a vehicle was discovered floating in water at Weld County Roads 73 and 16, according to a news release from the Weld County Sheriff's Office.
A Keenesburg Police Department officer responding to the incident was caught in a vehicle by flood waters, but was able to escape and was not injured, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
The sheriff's office said it responded to a report of a traffic hazard with a car floating in water at the intersection about 9 a.m. Friday.
The motorist drove past roadblocks in place to prevent vehicles from entering an area with dangerous floodwaters, according to the sheriff's office. The vehicle was then swept away by the water.
The sheriff's office said the motorist was pulled out of the water by witnesses on scene, life saving measures were administered but the individual did not survive.
The motorist's identify will be released by the Weld County Coroner.
The sheriff's office said its deputies were unable to man road barricades because of efforts dedicated to rescuing drivers going around the barricades and into flood waters.
On Friday afternoon, the county listed multiple road closures because of water run off from storms in the Denver metro area earlier in the day. The county said the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Sand Creek and Box Elder areas of southeast Weld County.
The list of road closures from the county are below. The county warned additional closures might be possible through the weened.
Weld County Road 73 from Colo. 52 to Weld 18
Weld 71 from Weld 14 to Weld 16
Weld 10 from Colo. 79 (Weld 69) to Weld 73
Weld 14 from Weld 69 to Weld 71
Weld 16 from Weld 71 to Weld 73
Weld 18 from Weld 73 to Weld 75.5
Weld 22 east of Weld 73.
Six vehicles drove into flood waters on Friday, leading to six human rescues and five K-9 rescues performed by sheriff's office deputies.
Barricades are in place at Weld County Road 71 eastbound and Weld County Road 16. The sheriff's office said drivers are ignoring barricades and driving around because the road appears to be clear.
The road is washed out within a mile of the barricade, and a sheriff's deputy is stationed in a vehicle nearby to slow drivers and prevent them from driving into the water.
The sheriff's office said it's sent a request to the Colorado Department of Transportation for hard barriers to better prevent drivers from ignoring barricades currently in place.
