Logan County Humane Society will join more than 350 animal shelters in 44 states across the country to participate in a program called "Empty the Shelters" July 6-31.
The event is sponsored by Bissell Pet Foundation and MetLife Pet Insurance.
Adoption fees at participating organizations will be just $50 or less per cat or dog. As the nation's largest funded adoption event, "Empty the Shelters" has helped nearly 158,000 pets find loving homes with an average of 1,200 pets adopted per day during quarterly national events.
John Johnson, director of Logan County Humane Society's shelter in Sterling, said he's grateful for the attention the Bissell/MetLife event will bring to the plight of overcrowded shelters.
Logan County Humane Society adoption fair, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 8 at the shelter, 2250 Leisure Lane, Sterling. $50 per dog, $20 per cat.
"We have 30 cats in-house and ten more are fostered in people's homes, and we have 18 dogs in-house and another four in foster care," Johnson said. "We are completely full. This (event) will help spread the word of how many animals we have."
In addition to the Empty the Shelters promotion, the Logan County shelter will have its own adoption fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 8 at the shelter. Johnson said adoption fees during the event will be $50 per dog and $20 per cat.
Johnson cautioned potential adopters that the shelter's adoption process takes about a week from the time an animal is selected until it can go home with the family. During that time an application is submitted and vetted, the animal is thoroughly examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered if necessary, and a home visit may be conducted.
During the national event, MetLife is offering 30 days of free health insurance for each adopted animal followed by discounted insurance for one year.
Bissell Pet Foundation was founded in 2011 by Cathy Bissell, 52, who is director of corporate affairs for Bissell Inc. Her husband, Mark, great-grandson of Melville and Anna Bissell, who created the company in 1876, is president and CEO. Bissell is a familiar name to many American pet owners who use the company's appliances to tidy up after their pets around the house.
