On June 13, 2023, hundreds of volunteers from various organizations, of all ages and walks of life, stood on the Capital steps for group photos, passed through security and into the Congressional buildings of the Senate and House, walked the halls, entered offices of members of congress, spoke with the staff and, if available, the members of congress themselves, to engage in conversation about their organization's concerns and goals.
I was privileged to do this with Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) a non-partisan organization, well recognized on the Hill, that works to develop the political will to address climate change. We had arranged appointments with over 436 offices of members of congress and I was part of teams visiting with staff members of Rep. Caraveo, CO-08, and Rep. Neguse, CO-02.
We ranged in age from 14 to 80+, from high school student to retired professor. They were respectful and productive conversations about our climate challenges and effective solutions, such as healthy forests and building electrification, carbon pricing and permitting reform.
We were peacefully living out our motto, "Our Solution to Climate Change? Democracy."
This was cause enough for celebration!
