Meets large and small can provide their own perks. At the Tom Meyer Invite at Akron High School last week, Merino's track and field team proved as much.
With a bit of a skeleton crew, the Rams still found a way to earn impressive marks at the small-school meet that welcomed 21 teams from around the state. They only had 18 entrants, but walked away with nine top-15 marks.
The boys started it off with fifth place in the 4x200-meter relay after they clocked in at one minute, 44.03 seconds. Sophomore Coby King served as the top representative on the boys' side after notching 10th place in both the discus and the shot put with throws of 101 feet, 3 inches and 34–4.50, respectively.
Freshman Ashlyn Hutt, who's been making quite the impression in the long-distance runs, continued that streak with silver in the 1,600 and a time of 6:24.19. Wray's Addison Jones blew away the entire field by crossing the finish line in 6:07.61.
The girls 800-meter sprint medley relay finished right in the middle of the pack at fourth place after the ladies recorded a time of 2:07.09. The 4x800-meter relay team, however, dominated their competition with gold and a 10:51.19 mark to beat out second-place Fleming by over one minute and 12 seconds.
Freshman Jadelynn Powell won the high jump with a clearance of 4–10, tying the effort of Wray's Sharon Greek, but achieving the feat in fewer attempts. In the long jump, freshman Hailey Foos just barely missed the podium at 11th place and a leap of 12–7. Sophomore Kenah Meraz ended Merino's day with 10th in the shot put after she launched the shot 27 feet.
Next up, the Rams will head to Wray on Wednesday as their season begins to wind down in preparation for the state meet.
