There was plenty of wonder and many laughs as around 50 children and their parents gathered at Sterling Public Library Tuesday evening to celebrate the kick off of the library's Summer Reading Program with Nickelodeon's "Entertainer of the Year" Chad Wonder Magic.
The magician showed off his sleight of hand with a variety of magic tricks, from color-changing handkerchiefs to ropes that changed sizes, while also sharing about his time in the magic business and speaking about the importance of reading and what you can learn from books.
If you haven't already signed up for the free Summer Reading Program you can do so at any time and make sure to turn in your reading time by July 28 to win prizes. All children ages two through 12th grade who complete six levels or more of reading will be invited to a special end-of-summer program at Fox 5 Theatre and adults will receive a free bag after six levels.
This year's theme, "All Together Now," is all about kindness, friendship and working together. Those concepts and more will be explored through a variety of programs offered for all ages.
Fifth graders and younger are invited to attend Stories and More @ The Library every Monday at 10 a.m. There will be fun activities and stories. Next week's program is "Will You Be My Friend?" and will celebrate friends.
Also, kindergarten through fifth graders can work on their cooking skills with Cooking With Kids @ the Library, offered every other Tuesday at 2 p.m. Kids will have the opportunity to learn some basic cooking skills and enjoy some yummy food they create themselves, starting with smoothies on June 6. Space is limited, so must call the library to register.
On weeks when that program isn't offered, those same ages can let their creativity shine with Kids Create every other Tuesday at 2 p.m. The first class is June 13 and will be on unusual painting. Space is limited, so you must call the library to register.
For the younger ages, Story Time is a fun way to engage young children in books. Kids will begin to develop a lifelong love of stories, reading and books, and adults might even pick up a few ideas on how to develop early literacy skills. There are several sessions offered, Baby Time, for ages 0-24 months, will be Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. and Little Readers, for ages 2-5, will be Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., choose which one works the best for you.
The fun will move outdoors Thursdays, June 8 and 22 and July 6 and 20, with Kids Club, starting at 10 a.m. at the Propst Park Pavilion. Each week will feature different activities for children in kindergarten through second grade, starting with experiments with science on June 8.
Not to be left out, Tween Time for ages third through fifth grade will take place Thursdays June 15 and 19 and July 13 and 27, starting at 10 a.m., at the Propst Park Pavilion. Again, there will be a variety of activities starting with experiments with science.
Bring the fun home with Take and Make Craft Bags, which will be handed out every Thursday at RE-1 Valley School District's Summer Food Service Program at Prairie Park. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and projects will be available from noon to 1 p.m. Each bag will have most of the things that you need to complete a fun craft.
If there are extra bags, they will be available at the library while supplies last.
There will be several programs for middle and high school students too.
Teen Movie Nights, for grades 6-12, will be every Thursday starting at 5:15 p.m. through July 27. Most of the movies will be rated PG-13, so parental discretion is advised. Movie titles will be announced one week before the showing. Snacks and drinks will be provided for teens.
Additionally, a Graphic Novel Creation Club, for grades 6-12, will be offered June 21-22, from 1 to 3 p.m. both days. This exciting literacy and arts class will introduce students to comic book culture, develop their literacy skills and encourage their artistic skills using comic books, graphic novels and manga. Registration is required, grades 6-8 must register at Northeastern Junior College for the Kids College class and grades 9-12 may register at the library.
The fun will continue with a Middle Grade Book Club on June 20 and July 11, starting at 6 p.m. Meet with others who like the unique books of middle grade and enjoy a mix of reading and snacking with discussions and fun.
Adults, there will be activities for you too.
Show your creative side with Community Sketchbook; the library will have sketchbooks available all summer to check out for one week. Also, throughout June, show photographic proof of a 3x3 foot space cleaned of trash to enter a grand prize drawing.
Other activities in June will include Yoga in the Park with Cindy on June 15, at 2 p.m., at Propst Park; a Sandra Dallas author event on June 19, starting at 6 p.m., at the library; and bingo on June 29, starting at 6 p.m., at the library.

The library will also offer one more special performance during the Summer Reading Program. Joshua the Ventriloquist will stop by Thursday, June 29, at 6 p.m. This show is full of comedy, magic and lots of audience interaction, and is recommended for the young and old alike.
