A 22-year-old man suspected of shooting and killing a young woman in November is in jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and conspiracy charges.
22-year-old Amos Alaniz has since been taken into custody for first-degree murder and conspiracy charges.
The case dates to about 3:42 a.m. Nov. 28, when Greeley police responded to multiple calls of shots fired near 24th Street Lane. Two officers arrived on the scene to find an unresponsive Herminia Marquez with a gunshot wound on her torso lying in the property's backyard.
She was later pronounced dead by a doctor. The Weld County coroner ruled the manner of death as a homicide.
Witnesses informed dispatch that the suspect vehicle was a White Chevrolet Suburban. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver eluded the officers.
At 3:53 a.m., officers located the vehicle, which was stolen out of Greeley, abandoned with the front passenger door and left rear passenger doors opened in the 500 block of 18th Street. A partially loaded handgun magazine was found on the ground near the vehicle.
Officers made contact with 20-year-old Anahi Alaniz, a woman running from the area. She was taken into custody on a felony warrant for first-degree burglary out of Larimer County. She was later released on bond.
Police then obtained a search warrant for the Suburban, recovering a loaded fourteen-round Glock 9mm handgun magazine, a loaded high-capacity Glock 9mm handgun magazine, a Visa card in the name of Mary Garcia, a photograph of Garcia's brother, a key fob for an Audi and a black Samsung cellular phone belonging to Garcia.
On Jan. 13, Garcia was taken into custody on suspicion of charges including first-degree murder and conspiracy.
Two people spoke with the police about the involvement of Garcia, Anahi Anahi and her brother, Amos Alaniz, in the homicide.
A few hours prior to Marquez's murder, Amos loaned his stolen Audi to Anahi and Marquez, but he became paranoid when his vehicle wasn't returned. He contacted the two demanding the car back several times.
Garcia helped Amos search for the Audi in her previously stolen Suburban. The two encountered the Audi, driven by Marquez, at a 7-Eleven. Garcia and Amos pursued the Audi.
Amos fired his handgun at the vehicle during the chase. When the Audi finally stopped and Marquez exited the car, Amos shot her.
Then Amos entered the Audi, where his sister was located in the passenger seat, and drove a short distance away. Amos then parked the Audi, removed certain items, wiped down portions of the interior and then the two fled in the vehicle driven by Garcia.
Anahi has a warrant open for an accessory to a crime, first-degree murder, charge in relation to the Nov. 23 homicide of Marquez.
Amos has since been taken into custody for first-degree murder and conspiracy charges.
The district attorney's office has until 3:30 p.m. Monday to file charges against Amos. He has a status conference set for 11:30 a.m. April 12.
