A Weld judge set a June status conference for a 59-year-old woman accused of intentionally crashing her vehicle into a guiderail and killing her father-in-law.
Mary Ann Stickle of Milliken appeared in Weld District Court on Thursday for a status conference with her defense attorney Andrew Leclere, who filed a motions to determine if Stickle is competent to proceed to trial.
A competency evaluation must be completed in 35 days so the court can discuss the findings at the next hearing.
Stickle faces second-degree murder and first-degree assault on an at-risk person after she purposely drove herself and her father-in-law into a highway guardrail, according to police.
In the afternoon of March 24, a 911 caller reported Stickle was taking her father-in-law to a shelter. The caller reported Stickle wasn't allowed to leave the house and her father-in-law wasn't supposed to be moved.
Shortly after, Greeley police responded to a one-vehicle crash on Colo. 257 and 10th Street. Police suspected Stickle drove her vehicle into the guardrail with her father-in-law in the car. An officer determined it appeared Stickle deliberately turned the steering wheel toward the guiderail.
Paramedics took Stickle and her father-in-law to a hospital for their injuries. She initially faced attempted murder charges, but her father-in-law later died — adding a second-degree murder charge to her offenses.
Stickle has a criminal history under the last name "Benavides," according to online records. She posted bond after a September arrest on suspicion of assault charges. She was also arrested in July 2022 on suspicion of felony menacing, assault and criminal mischief charges.
A judge set Stickle's bond to $15,000. She posted bond on April 5.
Stickle's next court date is 8:15 a.m. June 13.
