A reusable scheme has been relaunched to support families this week.
To help start life the sustainable way this Reusable Nappy Week (April 24-30), Denbighshire County Council has gone live with the Reusable Nappy Voucher scheme.
The average baby uses 5,000 nappies at a cost of around £1,500. Disposable nappies cannot be reused and are difficult to recycle, most disposable nappies will be sent to incineration.
Across Wales alone, about 200 million nappies are thrown away each year.
Having reusable nappies can save money in the long run, have a lower environmental impact and can reduce household waste.
The carbon footprint of nappy usage can be reduced by up to 40 percent if families switch to reusable nappies instead of single-use nappies. Manufacturing of reusable nappies also uses around 98 percent fewer raw materials.
The Reusable Nappy Voucher scheme can help people purchase reusable nappies if your child is aged between 0 and 18 months.
Denbighshire County Council is also running the scheme on behalf of Flintshire County Council. Flintshire alongside Denbighshire residents are eligible to take part in the scheme.
Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: "The Reusable Nappy Voucher scheme provides modern reusable comfortable nappies that can save families money, help reduce their household waste, and that are easy to use.
"We know that everybody's circumstances are different and it is ok if you need to use a mixture of reusable and disposable nappies to suit needs. Even this can help make a difference to finances and the impact on our environment and the more you can use the better for all so I would encourage all parents to take a look at this fantastic scheme."
