A 23-year-old will spend 60 years behind bars for shooting and killing a Greeley man in October 2020.
On Monday, Weld Judge Vincente Vigil imposed the maximum sentence of 60 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for Michael Hernandez, 23, according to a Weld County District Attorney's Office news release.
A jury this past week convicted Hernandez of one count of second-degree murder and one count of engaging in a riot.
His case dates back to Oct. 29, 2020, when Greeley police responded to a shooting in the 1100 block alley between 11th and 12th streets. Officers found 27-year-old Maurice Maestas lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head.
Maestas was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
At the time of the shooting, Hernandez was on probation for a 2018 burglary case, the release said. He also pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder in 2017.
"It's clear from his consistent, violent behavior, that this defendant has zero respect for human life or for the law," Chief Deputy District Attorney Anthony Perea said in the release. "This was completely senseless and has destroyed so many lives. Though nothing will bring back our victim, we hope this lengthy prison sentence will send a clear message to the community that we absolutely will not tolerate this type of senseless behavior."
Perea and Deputy District Attorney Chandler Croom prosecuted this case.
