Four games have passed early into the 2023 season for Sterling baseball, and in each instance, the Tigers have proven themselves elite among the competition.
Their 4-0 record — and general dominance against their opponents — earned them the No. 3 ranking in CHSAANow.com's Class 3A coaches poll last week.
The Tigers began their current tear with an 11-1 victory over Bennett, only to pummel Fort Morgan even harder in an 18-4 campaign. In their opener against Bennett, sophomore Caysen Bamford, freshman Dayten DiOrio and senior Wyatt Buckley all knocked in two runs.
Buckley came alive on offense even more against the Mustangs, driving in six runs off of two hits and scoring four himself. DiOrio added another five RBIs himself as junior Trenton Allen and senior Jake Gordon each drove in a couple more.
Sterling carried that offensive mastery into their next contest against Wellington and needed just four innings to end that 20-2 contest. The Eagles couldn't overcome the 10-run second inning that they gave up, but the Tigers only earned 12 RBIs in the effort. This time around, junior Brennen Welsh took the lead with four RBIs as DiOrio added another three. Junior Andrew Wright, sophomore Robbie Carrasco and sophomore Ein Denning all added RBIs of their own.
Last Thursday, Sterling faced its first real test of the year when it traveled to Strasburg, but left the Indians with a 7-4 parting gift. The Tigers took the early lead, driving home six runs through the first four innings, and kept the Indians at arm's length after allowing them to score two runs in the first inning, then two more in the bottom of the seventh.
Buckley collected the only RBI that the Tigers earned.
Now, the Tigers will turn their attention toward hosting a tough, 3-1 Highland team on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
