Former Premier League defender Adrian Mariappa is loving the 'old school' partnership between 'warrior' Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane at Manchester United.
The duo have become Erik ten Hag's preferred defensive partnership this season helping the Red Devils win the Carabao Cup against Newcastle last weekend.
Martinez and Varane run a tight ship at Old Trafford
United have kept 10 clean sheets in the league this season and Martinez has particularly impressed despite a rocky start at Old Trafford.
Having moved to United from Ajax last summer, some pundits - including Graeme Souness - questioned whether the Argentina international was tall enough to cope with the physicality of the Premier League.
The Red Devils slumping to back-to-back defeats at the start of the campaign to Brighton and Brentford, didn't help matters.
Since then, Martinez has been instrumental in United's rise up the table and former Watford and Crystal Palace defender Mariappa has hailed the 25-year-old for proving people wrong.
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, Mariappa said: "The two I'm really enjoying watching at the moment is Lisandro Martinez and Varane. I love that partnership.
"You look at some of the great partnerships of days gone by and I think that partnership is an old school little and large [partnership] but they compliment each other so well. Varane is cool and calm and collected [and] Martinez is a warrior.

"He [Martinez] is a short centre half like me [so] I'm enjoying him prove a couple of people wrong, especially some of the pundits out there who said he weren't going to be big enough for the Premier League!
"Testament to him, he's been brilliant. I'm really enjoying watching that partnership."
