Mason Greenwood will never play for England as long as Gareth Southgate is in charge as forward waits for decision over Manchester United future

Mason Greenwood will have no chance of playing for England again while Gareth Southgate is manager.

Reports claim the Manchester United forward is hoping to pick up his international career after charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour were dropped last month.

Greenwood hasn't played a game since January 2022, and is currently waiting for United to make a decision over his future at the club.

While the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges against the footballer, the Premier League giants have launched their own investigation to determine their next steps.

Recent reports have claimed United could force Greenwood to conduct a TV interview and undergo therapy if they decide to allow him back into the team.

However, fan groups, sponsors and the women's team would be consulted over their opinions before that happens, and the Red Devils could still decide to cut ties with the forward entirely.

It appears, though, that a decision has already been made about his immediate international future.

The 21-year-old has turned down an approach to play for Jamaica, who he qualifies to play for on his mother's side, in hope of returning to the England fold.

But, according to The Sun, he will not be selected for the Three Lions squad as long as Southgate is in charge.

A source close to the situation is quoted: "He is clinging to the hope of playing again at the highest level.

"But Southgate places a great deal of importance on not only a player's talent, but how the squad gels."

Greenwood hasn't made an appearance for England since making his debut at the age of 18 against Iceland in 2020.

Two days later, he and Phil Foden were sent home from the camp after allegedly bringing two women back to the team hotel in a breach of COVID-19 rules at the time.
