In 2021/22, Liverpool were in with a chance of winning an unprecedented quadruple right up until the last couple of weeks of the campaign.
In the end they fell just short in the Premier League and the Champions League, but they still added two trophies to the Anfield cabinet in the form of the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.
This time around, the Reds will almost certainly end the season empty-handed.
A 5-2 thrashing by Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie leaves Liverpool on the brink of elimination from Europe's foremost competition.
They were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Manchester City in December, before going down to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup a month later.
Realistically speaking, Liverpool only have one thing left to play for this term: the top four. But if they are to qualify for the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp's side cannot afford to drop many more points.
Indeed, they are already nine adrift of Tottenham Hotspur in fourth place. Wednesday's meeting with Wolves is one of two games in hand which Liverpool must take full advantage of.
Anything less than a win this midweek would leave Klopp's team with a mountain to climb in the race for the top four.
Liverpool vs Wolves betting tips
A game of few goals looks to be on the cards when Liverpool welcome Wolves to Anfield on Wednesday night.
Under 2.5 goals - 11/10 (Spreadex)
After 23 games Liverpool have scored 38 goals, an average of 1.65 per match. At the equivalent stage of last season, they had put the ball in the back of the net a league-high 60 times, or 2.61 per match.
It is a stark drop-off. Liverpool's defence is not performing as well as last season either, with 28 goals conceded now compared to 19 at this point in 2021/22.
The Reds struggled at the back early on in Klopp's tenure, but their productive frontline often bailed out the porous defence. No longer.
Liverpool went back to basics at Selhurst Park on Saturday. They did not take many risks and seemed to prioritise a clean sheet. They got one too, but could only draw 0-0 with Crystal Palace after creating few chances of note.
Wolves are not exactly free-scoring either. They have made the net bulge just 18 times; only Everton (17) have a worse record going forward.
Wolves' away games this season have featured an average of 2.25 goals, and this match could follow suit. Unfortunately for the neutrals, it is unlikely to be a classic.
Under 0.5 goals first half - 11/5 (Spreadex)
At their best, Liverpool frequently blew visitors to Anfield away before half-time. They played with such energy and intensity that opposition sides often could not cope, particularly under the lights in an evening game.
That has not seldom been the case this term. Indeed, Liverpool have been ahead at the interval in less than half of their 11 games at Anfield.
And in only eight of their 23 matches at any stadium have Liverpool been in front at the midway point.
Wolves, you feel, would settle for a goalless first half too. The longer the match stays at 0-0, the more likely it is that the Anfield crowd will grow frustrated.
There is no danger of the home fans turning on a group of players that has given them so much in recent years, but a subdued atmosphere would also work in Wolves' favour.
Julen Lopetegui's side delivered a superb showing in beating Liverpool 3-0 at Molineux last month, but this will be a much tougher encounter at Anfield.
Wolves will look to keep things tight early on as they seek to do the double over the Reds for the first time since 1950.
For a long time this term, everyone has been waiting for the Liverpool of recent seasons to return.
But given we are now seven months into the 2022/23 campaign, it increasingly looks like that team is gone.
A revamp of the squad is needed before Klopp's side are in position to challenge for the major prizes once more.
That is not to say there have been no good performances from the Reds this season.
They impressed in a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in October, in a 2-1 triumph over Tottenham in November and in the majority of their Champions League group games.
But the campaign has largely been disappointing, and if Liverpool are to get over the line in the race for the top four, it will probably be by grinding out wins rather than turning on the style.
Klopp's team simply must find a way to come out on top against Wolves. On this occasion at least, the result is more important than the performance.
It could take Liverpool a while to get going, but their superior individual quality may decide the game in the second half, especially as the return to full fitness of Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota means Klopp now has more attacking options at his disposal.
