Barcelona were initially open to a sale but the Dutchman rebuffed United's advances due to a dispute with the Catalan giants over unpaid wages.
But United believe they have a stronger case to put to the 25-year-old after a season where they have made great strides, including picking up their first piece of silverware in six years.
Brazilian star Casemiro has been key to United's resurgence and now United fans are dreaming of what might be if De Jong opts to rejoin Ten Hag – his former boss at Ajax.
A midfield pairing of Casemiro and De Jong has even been likened to movie star duo Brad Pitt and Leonardo Di Caprio by talkSPORT's own Mark Goldbridge.
"I would put Casemiro as the best defensive midfielder in Europe this season," Goldbridge said.
"If you play with Casemiro and you're a bit of a box to box midfielder which De Jong is, you're going to have a very good time.

"If you put De Jong and Casemiro next to each other – oh my god.
"This is the footballing world equivalent to Brad Pitt and [Leonardo] Di Caprio in Once Upon a Time in America. It's just two legends absolutely tearing things up.
"I like Eriksen, I like [Marcel] Sabitzer and I like Fred but Frenkie de Jong supplemented by those players I've just mentioned – Absolutely fantastic."
And many appeared to agree with him, while they will have been impressed by his display against Real Madrid on Thursday night.
With Barcelona's debts continuing to spiral, there may be no alternative but to sell De Jong - a player that holds significant value.
After a summer of questions marks surrounding his future, De Jong has gone on to make 31 appearances this season, scoring three times.
