Gvardiol is already regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world Chelsea have already spent £143m on centre-backs in signing Wesley Fofana (£75m), Kalidou Koulibaly (£33m) and Beniot Badiashile (£35m). However, the position still seems to be a problem with a 38-year-old Thiago Silva remaining their most important defender. Boehly wants to provide Graham Potter with more superstar names in the form of Gvardiol. The Times report they have renewed their interest in the Leipzig star, but will have to act fast to avoid paying a £97m release clause that becomes active in 2024. The club have been admirers of the 21-year-old for some time and were in negotiations for the centre-back last summer. Their interest pre-dates Boehly's reign and have been tracking him since he was 17. Boehly looks set to add to his £600m spending Liverpool are also said to hold long-standing interest, while he nearly joined Leeds in 2020. "I knew that I needed to take a few steps more before I get [to the Premier League] one day," Gvardiol said last month. "Leipzig is a really good club and I feel good here. It's important I play almost every game." "You definitely think about a serious offer from a huge club like Chelsea," Gvardiol added when asked about transfer interest. "Leipzig said they didn't want to sell me. In the end I really struggled with that decision but we didn't make an agreement. I am here and I am fine with this because my idea had been to stay here.
