100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of March 1923, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:
• Colorado Rocky Mountain Champions in high school basketball, Windsor High School has been invited to play in the National Championships. They need funding to pay for the team's trip, and are asking for donations from Windsor and surrounding communities.
• Someone attempted to steal Jake Brethauer's auto at 520 8th Street in Greeley at 7 a.m. Monday morning. However, they were frightened away, leaving the auto inside the garage. The ignition switch was left open, staring a fire. Neighbors pushed the machine from the garage, and extinguished the blaze. Damage was estimated at $30.
• In Pierce, the strong winds of the blizzard blew out a window of the schoolhouse Monday night.
• In Evans, a 7-pound boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rusli on Monday, and during the same few days, Charles Erickson loaded a car with potatoes for a trip to Denver.
• The Knights of Pythias had their anniversary celebration Monday night at the Methodist Church. Two mammoth birthday cakes were donated. One had 19 candles for the 19 countries involved in the celebration, and one with 54 candles, representing the birthday years of the group. While the cake with 19 candles was delicious, the 54-candled cake was too large to eat, so was set up as a receptacle for birthday offerings inside the cake. The total donated came to $34.63
• The Kersey Ladies Aid Club gave two interesting playettes this week: "A Box of Monkeys," and "A Pair of Lunatics." Both were well received.
• In celebration of their state championship, the Windsor High School basketball team was honored by the town this week. Coach Joseph Ryan was presented with a $50 gold watch engraved with his initials by a local jeweler. Also, in honor of the team's success, a solo was presented by a saxophone sextet, and the title to the honorary song was "My Curly Headed Baby."
• The National American Homes Bureau announced the results of a country-wide poll this week. It showed women love cosmetics, movies, cigarettes and motor cars more than they love babies. They said this could lead to a national catastrophe.
• In Denver, a grand jury, investigating a confidence game that stole large sums of money, was stopped when the judges found the grand jury members were having a booze-drinking party in the District Court Grand Jury Offices.
