Mikel Arteta and Edu became acquainted many years before they banded together at Arsenal for a Premier League title tilt.
A resurfaced clip has emerged of a friendly between Arsenal and Rangers in 2003 at Ibrox where both played for opposite sides - and the Brazilian levelled the Spaniard with a couple of tasty challenges.
Edu and Arteta are now best buddies but it wasn't always that way
Edu was a fine midfielder when fitness allowed him while Arteta was an up-and-coming top talent for Rangers being tracked by Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal beat the Scottish side 3-0 with Edu getting on the scoresheet when his long-range effort was deflected past Gers goalkeeper Stefan Klos.
But during the game, the duo became embroiled in a tasty tussle - leaving the Spaniard unhappy.
The first incident came after just 13 minutes when Arteta tried to shield the ball from three Arsenal players.
One of them happened to be Edu, who did not waste much knocking him to the ground.
Arteta was furious with the referee for not booking his future director of football, gesturing his ire to the official.
And the first challenge between Arteta and Edu wasn't too badArteta was not amused by Edu's challenge though
"That's very loose," the commentator said, underselling the Brazilian's lunge in on the Rangers player just minutes later.
But while Arsenal went on to cruise to victory, Arteta was a shining light for Alex McLeish's men and nearly had a goal in the eighth minute when his free-kick from a tight angle hit the post.
The second challenge from Edu had some more venom behind itArteta hit the deck, unsurprisinglyEdu and Arteta followed each other across the pitch
Jens Lehmann was forced into a good save soon after when the midfielder let loose a ripping shot while the former Barcelona B star had plenty of nice touches around the pitch.
But with transfer rumours swirling in his head with Blackburn and Atletico Madrid interested, it would have never struck Arteta that 20 years later he would be on course to lead Arsenal to a first Premier League title since that same year he faced them.
And he certainly would not have believed it had someone told him he would be doing so with the man that stamped on his ankle next to him, calling the shots in the transfer market.
